AUGUST 1-3, 2025
No project in Maxwell's vibrant history has captivated hearts, sparked enthusiasm, and fostered community spirit quite like the Old Settlers Picnic. This cherished tradition dates back to the early 1900s, blossoming from reunions held by Civil War veterans and members of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), a national organization that once united brave souls. Among them was Micah French, a veteran of the War of 1812, who, alongside his comrades, camped under the protective shade of a grove on the town's western edge. At the G.A.R.'s sixth reunion in 1885, a remarkable crowd of about 3,000 gathered to celebrate camaraderie. By 1887, Maxwell was home to 41 proud veterans.
Incorporated in 1883, Maxwell's journey took a significant turn in 1892 when Baldwin and Maxwell generously donated five acres for a thriving city park. In August 1901, a small group convened at the Old Opera House to discuss the potential of hosting reunions in this park, leading to the birth of the "Old Settlers and Homecoming Picnic".Plans were finalized on September 5, and the inaugural picnic took place on October 2, though inclement weather nudged festivities indoors. Attendees savored basket dinners while the Maxwell Coronet Band and Glee Club provided lively musical interludes.
Since that memorable first gathering, the Old Settlers Picnic has blossomed into an annual celebration each August, featuring a delightful blend of nostalgia and modern flair. Over the years, the picnic has showcased a rich tapestry of activities-from spirited political speeches and sheaf-tying contests to captivating wrestling matches. A carousel once powered by a blind horse eventually transitioned to a steam-powered marvel, and music evolved from a simple music box to the enchanting sounds of a calliope. The 50th anniversary was particularly spectacular, featuring an open-air circus that paraded through the streets, complete with an elephant!
The Old Settlers Picnic is intrinsically linked to the city park, with enhancements made to the park benefiting the event. The iconic bandstand, originally constructed in 1892, remains the heart of our festivities, continuously updated to reflect the times. A concrete slab was added in 1938 for dancing and Sunday services, while a shelter house built in 1959 now serves as a bustling food stand run by local churches.
Today, the Old Settlers Picnic has embraced modernization while retaining its beloved traditions. A local family now manages the electrifying Saturday tractor pulls, and the Maxwell Rodeo Committee curates a thrilling rodeo that has drawn up to 250 cowboys over the years. The weekend is a whirlwind of activities, featuring a lively Friday volleyball tournament and family games. Saturday kicks off with a festive parade down Main Street, while Sunday culminates in a heartfelt community worship service led by local churches, followed by family-friendly fun orchestrated by the dedicated committee.
A significant focus of our planning is ensuring that children create unforgettable memories at the picnic. Many eagerly save their allowances for the delightful fun and food stands, and for many youngsters, this event marks their first chance to participate in a parade or an eating contest. Our meticulous planning is a year-round endeavor, with monthly meetings dedicated to brainstorming fresh ideas and tackling past challenges. The week leading up to the event is a whirlwind of activity, starting with setup on Wednesday-erecting fences, placing garbage cans, hanging signage, coordinating vendors, and managing countless other essential tasks that lay the groundwork for a successful celebration.
It's truly inspiring to witness the unwavering dedication of our citizens whenever the future of the Old Settlers Picnic has seemed uncertain. Each year, the committee rises to the occasion, introducing new and exciting programs that create lasting memories and traditions, enriching our local history and bringing the community together in celebration. Join us in this time-honored tradition, where every picnic is a testament to our shared past and a promise of joyful futures!
